United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC)

COUNTINEWS- The anti corruption movement in Indonesia has begun to reach the grassroots, according to a representative of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

"I have been in Indonesia for three years, and today I see new energy to fight corruption coming from the people, NGOs, and the media," Ajit Joy, UNCAC Representative in Indonesia, said when attending an event to observe International Anti-Corruption Day at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headoffice here Thursday.

Eradicating corruption at the grassroots was as important as at the top level of society, he said. The United Nationss fully supported the anti corruption drive in Indonesia, and hoped it would also spread to other countries.

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) Coordinator Danang Widoyoko said the International Anti-Corruption Day’s theme this year was "Anti-Corruption Kampong". It indicated that those supporting the fight against corruption were the public, he said.

"This is said because the state does not give its support to the corruption eradication efforts," he said.

KPK Commissioner M Jasin explained that the "Anti-corruption Kampongs" theme was aimed at educating the public about corruption eradication. Anti-Corruption Day was declared in 2003 by the United Nations to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the UN Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.
